Getting your book published is not an easy feat. Very few get published the first time they submit a piece and even fewer actually complete their manuscripts for consideration. Publishing can be intimidating to say the least, but there are some keys that you need to help you get your book published. While these keys will not guarantee that your book will get published, they certainly help in accomplishing the goal of getting your book published.

Read

One sure way to become a good writer is to read. What should you read? Read books, magazines, and other pieces for literature in areas that are relevant to your aspirations. You also want to read the classics, works from other cultures and times, even include some Include some poetry. Read a wide range of subjects and read as much as you can. If you’re writing fiction read some nonfiction. If you’re writing nonfiction read some fiction.

Determine your purpose for writing

Have you considered why you are writing? What do you hope to accomplish by writing the book you have in mind? These and other questions must be considered as you determine your purpose for writing a book that publishers will consider. Be honest about why you want to write and consider the cost because not everyone will get picked up by the big publishing houses.

Consider the Cost

Are you ready to put in the time to write a book? Are you ready for critiques? Can you handle having to write, rewrite, and then writing again?

The bottom line is that you just can’t write a book and think it will get published. It takes time, sometimes years to get your book to a point where it is ready to present to publishers. So count up the cost.

Write the book

Don’t give up! Write the book! Make your way to the end and then see what you’ve got. You can pitch a chapter and query to a publisher unless you are already a well known author, a recognized authority on your subject or very lucky. So get that book done and then pitch it to the publisher.

Other keys you want to consider is the rewrite process, the query letter, and the submission process.

Getting a book published does take work. Please don’t assume it doesn’t. Take the time to discover the process by researching, reading books on how to get published, and asking writers who have become published authors. Write that book today!
