When you are using the art of spoken word, there are no two ways of getting your message across. However there are a few ideas that will help you perform your piece in a way that will have the audience mesmerized and talking about your performance for months to come.
- The Words – Poetry is emotions shared through word and so when you perform spoken word, that emotion must show in some way. If you’re the emotional part lacks, then your performance will definitely fall on deaf ears.
- The Music – Since you are performing poetry, using music that has words is a big no no. Instrumental is best for spoken word and you want to make sure that it fits what you are saying and what you want to convey to your audience. It is best to practice your piece to different type of instrumental music and see what fits.
- Your Body – In spoken word, you should let your body talk as well. Your hands, legs, face, and feet should all have a part in your performance. While it is not a good idea to go overboard, it is a wise move to use your body while you do spoken word. Body language is a strong conveyor of the message you want to get across.
You can also include your audience, bring props (but not too many) and even have back ground singers. There are many ways you can bring your poetry to life with spoken word. You just have to find what works for you.
