Have you ever been faced with writer’s block? You know that phenomenon where you get a temporary loss of ability to begin or continue writing. This is usually due to lack of inspiration or creativity. Have you ever tried to work through it but with no success?
Here are some helpful tips to help you get over the block in your head that keeps you from writing:
- Schedule time to write and work. Don’t be concerned with the quality of the output; just worry about getting some words on paper.
- Engaging in brief periods of “freewriting” or “mindwriting,” where you can impulsively write whatever comes to mind. Again don’t be concerned with quality or grammar – just write the words down on paper.
- If you are doubting yourself or having negative thoughts, challenge them by writing about your awesome writing skills.
- Take a break, meditate, or do something relaxing to help you release the stress and penned up energy.
- Doing something out of the ordinary. If writer’s block comes from a lack of new ideas, attempts to spark creativity by going somewhere new or doing something different can be useful.
- Don’t stop writing. Take a break for a day or two but do come to your pad and paper.
- Write a basic plot outline of the story if having problems keeping the story on the rails.
- Brainstorming at the beginning of the writing can help the writer by relating every point to another.
- Reading, watching movies or plays, or similar activities that might bring inspiration.
- Get some exercise and go outdoors. Maybe your brain needs a little oxygen. Aerobic exercise oxygenates the brain, and walking in particular is a time honored remedy for creative block. A nice 20 minute walk will do wonders. Diet and exercise are linked to optimal performance of mind and body - thus, keeping oneself in good health is important for creative output. Set your writing down, go out and do something (something that will keep you busy) and then come back in a few hours with a fresh mind.
Really, there is a way to get over your writer’s block.
