Developing Your Writing Style

November 20th, 2008

When it comes to developing a writing style it is all about familiarity. By focusing on what you know and writing in a way that is most comfortable for you, you should have no problem developing a unique style that others can recognize and enjoy as your own. It is a good idea to remember that what people will remember about your writing, it not the concept behind it but rather how you said it. That is your style. The difference between great or good writing and poor work has all to do with your individual style.

If you are looking to become a published writer and one that people will read over and over again, there are a few things that you need to know. A few tips to help you on your road to great writing and mush success.

  • Write. There’s no substitute for simply writing as much as you can. Don’t be concerned with getting published when you first start.  Your style will come but you must first love the craft of writing and put some words to paper.
  • Read. Take the time to read a large variety of works. Read what you are used to and what you are not used to. Don’t limit yourself to one genre because there is so much out there to read and devour so that your style grows.
  • Be clear. Your goal is to communicate. Make sure each sentence is as direct and simple as possible. You want to make it easy for your readers so that they have the pleasure of getting lost in your prose. Awkward writing takes readers out of the fictional dream you’re working so hard to create.
  • Experiment. Break out of your comfort zone. If you always write articles, try a short story, or part of one. If you write mostly for high-end travel magazines, try something for children. The goal here isn’t to break into a new market, although that may happen, it’s to play and experiment and stretch your boundaries. You can even do this with a sentence or two as an exercise.
  • Memorize Basic Rules. One way to develop writing skills is to learn these basics rules and make sure you use them all the time. The person who has a run-on sentence, writes in fragments, or throws in random commas all the time will not have the same success as a writer who knows the basics.

If you take the time to apply these few basic rules, you will be able to discover your style and find an audience that will stay with you.
